Carluccio’s Italian Restaurant, Newcastle

Last week, the Mr and I stopped by at Carluccio’s in Newcastle, all set to sample their summer menu.

Greeted with a warm welcome by the Carluccio’s team, lovely Angela looked after us throughout, guiding me through gluten-free options too. I can never turn down an Aperol Spritz, so obviously it would have been rude to sip one or two while out on the town.

The bustling atmosphere was partly due to an imminent performance at the nearby Theatre Royal, for which Carluccio’s Newcastle also offer a pre-theatre menu. Located on Grey Street, the restaurant is extremely central, covering both shopping and evening entertainment alike.

To start, I had the Prawns Marinara. A tangy, tasty dish comprising white wine, tomatoes, chilli and fennel, plus a tomato and basil sauce; it is usually served with ciabatta. For gluten-free peeps like me, some special bread accompanies the plate. Fresh, light and just what I fancied, Angela’s recommendation was spot on.

My husband tucked into the brand new Burrata and Prosciutto, made up of 14 month-aged prosciutto and Sardinian flatbread. The perfect combination, he was suitably impressed and eagerly awaited his next tempting course.

Onto our mains, for which we picked Chicken Saltimbocca and Duck Pappardelle. Chicken Saltimbocca is a recent addition to the Carluccio’s menu. Basically an escalope of chicken layered with prosciutto, this summery blend looked (and tasted, by all accounts) simply mouthwatering. My Duck Pappardelle was tweaked slightly, and gluten-free pasta replaced the standard accompaniment. A ragu with duck, pork, pancetta and mushroom, I have been craving it ever since. This is a classic comfort food dish, bursting with Italian flavour.

Although our tummies were happily full, there was most certainly room for some dessert. This had to be the Polenta Orange Cake for me, and Mr B chose a Lemon Tart. Both refreshing options, the fruity flavours were as moreish as the rest of our yummy meal. Finished with an espresso, our date night meal was complete.

I love how accommodating Carluccio’s is and as well as a gluten-free menu, they offer dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian variations. Service was speedy, and we were very well looked after. As we left, there was still some exploring to do. Among their colourful shelves, there are foodie picks for sale, inviting you to continue your authentic Italian experience at home.

Thank you so much for having us, Carluccio’s- we will return soon, this time bringing our hungry minis for a family meal.
