Last Wednesday was my birthday, so the Mr and I celebrated with a child-free trip to Newcastle, stopping off at Las Iguanas for a review lunch too.
One of two Las Iguanas restaurants in Newcastle, the venue we visited is situated on the Quayside. Embarking on a gorgeous sunny stroll from the central shops meant soaking up spring sunshine and the busy area’s hustle and bustle.
Walking into Las Iguanas, lovely team member Phil met us and I instantly noticed the bright, fresh interior. To kick off, my other half ordered a Sol and I went for Diet Coke. Meanwhile, Phil brought over a dedicated gluten-free menu and when asked for dish advice, he shared his two favourites. I did end up ordering both of these, which were- Fiesta Ensalada to start, followed by Moqueca De Palmitos.
Fiesta Ensalada is a light, refreshing salad comprising ingredients such as oven-dried tomatoes, roasted butternut squash and avocado, topped with a poppy seed dressing and toasted pumpkin seeds.
Mr B chose a sumptuous Lamb Empanadas for his starter, followed by Spicy Chicken Enchilada. The crispy empanada was filled with tomato and chipotle, plus zingy cranberry salad.
Back to my main, and the amazing Moqueca de Palmitos; a dish bursting with colour, vibrance and flavour, much like the restaurant itself. A warming coconut curry, it showcased components such as palm hearts, spinach, butternut squash, red peppers, spring onion rice and green beans. The entire meal was absolutely delightful, and packed full of fabulous taste sensations. I have noticed that each of my dishes are vegetarian, highlighting how varied the Las Iguanas menu is.
The other half’s Spicy Chicken Enchilada looked (and tasted, by all accounts) equally inviting. Hand-rolled and presented on spring onion rice, Chris was suitably stuffed after devouring this more-ish meal. We also chose a side of Sweet Potato Fries to share, offering a light and crispy extra. There was no room for dessert, however if pushed, standout menu options are the inviting Aztec Chocolate Fudge Cake and cinnamon sugar dusted Churros.
Service was speedy and efficient, the menu packed with lots of options and I absolutely loved this restaurant’s Latin American summery style. We left Las Iguanas full of delicious food and happy vibes, very eager to return again soon.
Disclaimer: our Las Iguanas meal was complimentary, in return for this review. As always, all thoughts and appetites are our own.
